7 Tips to Use Influencer Marketing for your Small Businesses 2019

7 Tips to Use Influencer Marketing for your Small Businesses 2019

Last year Google reported that there were a whopping 61,000 searches for the term “influencer marketing” per month compared to just 3,900 in 2015!

Unless you’ve been living in a cupboard you’ve probably heard of the term “Influencer Marketing” and seen it in action, but may not been sure how to use it for your own small business.

Here’s a summary of a talk we had all about it and how to use it for our own businesses at our Sevenoaks MIB Networking meetup from marketing expert extraordinaire Wendy Wyss of Wendy Wyss Marketing.

Retirement for Mums in Business – Are you planning?

Retirement for Mums in Business – Are you planning?

Do you have enough savings to provide an income for 40 years?
For most mums in business (me being one of them!), the answer is almost certainly a big fat “heck no!”.

According to the Office of National Statistics, someone currently in their 40s has a 25% chance of living until they’re 100, with more of us projected to live well into our 90s. As women tend to live longer than men, there’s a fair chance that might well be us getting letters from the future king.

Last night pensions specialist Kadi Wyke of St James’ Place came to talk to us about financial planning for mums in business.

30 Tips for mums starting a business from women who’ve been there 2019

30 Tips for mums starting a business from women who’ve been there 2019

I asked over 1,000 mums in business what would be their top piece of advice to someone considering starting a business to run around their family…

This week as part of our “Promote your Bizday” weekly activity in our Facebook group, I asked everyone what would be their top tip for a mum starting out in business for the first time. We’ve all been there and there’s a huge amount of experience in the group from over 1,000 women who’ve already taken the plunge and are “living the dream” of juggling a business around family life.

So here’s some of our advice and tips, I hope they help.

Another week, another meeting write-up!

This time the wonderful Cécile Jemmett of LinkedIn with Cécile came to talk to our Tunbridge Wells Mums in Business Network about how to use LinkedIn for your small business.

Interestingly Cécile was first inspired to use LinkedIn at one of our meet-ups about 5 years ago and has never looked back. Since then, helping others use it has turned into her entire business.

15 SEO Tips for your Website 2019

15 SEO Tips for your Website 2019

Google is a powerful beast and continually changing it’s algorithms (whatever they are?!) to make sure that if you search for something, you get the results you’re looking for. And because it’s so good at what it does it accounts for 90% of all searches on the internet. That compares to Bing (4%) and Yahoo 3%. So it’s kind of important to make sure your website is Google-friendly if you want to tap into that!

When you search for something, the first 3 results are usually paid-for ads. Under those, the top 5 “organic” results (that means the ones that aren’t paid for) account for 70% of clicks. Very few people click through to the second page of results so those first few spots are the prime organic ones that we all want to reach.

Nobody knows exactly how Google’s algorithms work and they’re constantly changing to keep search results relevant, but there are a few things that we know do help, so that’s what this blog will focus on.

How to use Pinterest for your Business

How to use Pinterest for your Business

Why we had a talk about Pinterest for Business…

A while back, it came up in discussion at one of our meet-ups that none of us knew a great deal about Pinterest. A lot of us had dabbled in it personally but none of us felt we were using it effectively for our businesses and there was probably some scope to do so. So last night Pinterest and marketing expert Darren Lock of Populo Marketing gave us a very insightful session on it at our Tunbridge Wells monthly meet-up.

It turned out that Darren is an absolutely mine of information about marketing, apps and tools and how they all work together and here’s a summary of his talk on using Pinterest for business….

10 Time Saving Tips for Social Media for your Business

10 Time Saving Tips for Social Media for your Business

Although social media is only one of the many hats that we need to wear as solo business owners, it can often be one of the most time consuming and is a black hole that seems to take over everything.

Last night was our monthly Sevenoaks Mums in Business Network meet-up, and as part of it Gemma Lloyd of Social Mums came along to share her expertise with us about how to be more time efficient with our social media. A while back I asked our members what they’d like her talk to focus and this subject was the hands-down winner – so it is at least reassuring that we’re all in the same boat I guess.

Business Buddying for Mums in Business

Business Buddying for Mums in Business

Janet and I are officially Business Buddies.

We’re both self-employed sole-traders, and also mums in business. If you’re in that boat yourself, you’ll know that means wearing a heck of a lot of hats, multitasking, juggling and all the inherent highs and lows. And mostly doing all that completely on your own (or boring the pants off your husband and friends by talking about it).

Being a sole trader can mean complete freedom to have control over your business and follow your ideas, but it can also mean getting very side-tracked, overwhelmed, stuck, and feeling lonely at times too.

Here’s what we do as as Business Buddies and how it works for us…

What to do when social media stops working

What to do when social media stops working

Did your business’ social media channels stop working yesterday too?

Yesterday (13 March 2019), Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp crashed for about 18 hours, meaning we suddenly couldn’t post or comment.

Now I don’t know about you, but I rely on social media, particularly Facebook, heavily for my business. Over 10 years I’ve worked really hard to build up over 4,000 likers and I use it to do a huge amount of my marketing.

I know I’m not the only one, and I’ve been seeing LOTS of posts and comments today about Facebook and Instagram not working. It caused all sorts of headaches for people with businesses who rely on it to reach their audiences.

You don’t own social media – do you have a plan if you suddenly your lose your page and followers?

It’s important to remember that we don’t own our social media pages, so we are totally subject to things going wrong and the whims of Facebook. Over the last decade of running a business I’ve known various people who inadvertently contravened a policy and had their page taken down – it is a genuine possibility. Or what happens if they suddenly start charging us just to have our pages there at all? They’ve already changed so that we need to pay to boost so that our audiences see our posts at all so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility.

So, if these things happen, if your page goes down or disappears entirely, do you have a way of contacting all those interested followers and likers who you’ve spent years acquiring?

This is EXACTLY why you need to have an up to date emailing list

So I thought it was worth a little reminder that things like this are exactly the reason that it’s worth having (and keeping up to date and at least occasionally using) an emailing list. This means that you always have the avenue of email marketing to use if you’ve been collecting the contact details of your clients and fan-base so that you’ve not lost them if things go wrong.

Make collecting emails part of your processes from the outset

Personally, I love Mailchimp and use it for everything. And I’m super-glad that I’ve been collecting everyone’s email addresses over the years (with their permission of course). Email sign up is an integrated part of my business processes. AND that I’ve backed it up because I don’t own Mailchimp either (more’s the pity). So when stuff like this happens, I know I haven’t lost my audience.

Need any help?

If you need help, we run Mailchimp training workshops to help you make the most of it. It’s brilliant (mostly free) and makes life easier in so many ways. And it’s a sort of insurance policy because you’ve not lost your audience or the ability to communicate with them when social media goes wrong.

If you’d like to find out more, sign up to our emailing list so that you receive invitations next time we have a date.

Bullet Journal for busy Mums in Business (who don’t have time for pretty pages)

Bullet Journal for busy Mums in Business (who don’t have time for pretty pages)

It’s that time of the year when we’re all making new resolutions and wanting to plan and refresh to make the year ahead more organised and successful that the last one. So I’ve been seeing lots of posts and chats in Facebook groups lately about planners and journals and finding out what works for people.

I’ve been running both my own business (Qalbi) and MIB Network for 10 years now. I’m also a mum of 2 school-age children who do lots of sports and have different term dates. So the combo means that I have to be pretty damn good at juggling to keep on top of things.

Over the years I’ve tried various planners and apps to help me but never really found the right one, or one that worked well enough and was easy enough to keep going for me to stick with it. I’m great at starting things but not so good at persisting if they’re a hassle. But then I discovered bullet journalling (I can’t remember how) 3 years ago and have never looked back. I honestly don’t know how I got through a day without my bujo.

I started off watching the Bullet Journal official video on their website, then got onto Pinterest where you can find heaps of ideas for just about everything you ever want to achieve or track. And they all looked super-pretty too. So I armed myself with a brightly coloured dotted bullet journal from Amazon and a pack of coloured pens that are lovely to write with and got to work.

And whilst I have a creative business (as you can see from my table surface in the video!) and so really appreciate attractive design, what I discovered very early on is that I am too busy for pretty when it comes to my bullet journal. So the video tour below shows my “stripped back” version which does what it says on the tin, after trial and error and experimenting with various formats and trackers from pinterest which ended up not really working for me.

So this is one for all you other busy women juggling running a business around kids, I hope it helps…

Claire
